MIDTOWN. Since opening its doors in 2002, Central BBQ has built quite a name for itself. Among the many barbecue joints in Memphis, Central has managed to stand out thanks to its reliable Memphis style fare. The ribs and pulled pork are some of the best in the city, which is no small feat. The sides, like mac n' cheese, BBQ beans, and cole slaw, are all as they should be, made-from scratch, and consistently delicious.

DOWNTOWN. This well-known establishment has been in business in downtown Memphis since 1948 and welcomes thousands of tourists every year. The walls are adorned with interesting historical memorabilia, but people come for the barbecued ribs, which can be shipped throughout the USA. The pork loin plate is also worth the trip. No-nonsense, friendly service will have your food on the table in no time. Beer and wine available.

EAST MEMPHIS. You won't mind waiting in line for this pulled pork shoulder barbecue. Whether you choose the ribs or the pork platter, you're sure to get a tasty meal. Reservations are not accepted, so go early to avoid the crowd.

DOWNTOWN. You'll get a huge bang for your buck at this family-run restaurant, and what is missing in ambience is more than made up for by the taste of the food. Served on paper plates set on plastic tablecloths, the barbecue comes in the form of baby back ribs, regular ribs and sandwiches. A specialty of the house is scrumptious Cornish game hen. No alcohol served.

DOWNTOWN. The lively Beale Street location complements the character of this '50s-style restaurant. Opened in 1912, Dyer's has served its famous burgers to Memphians for many years. The burgers are deep-fried, and it is said that they have been using the same grease since they opened! A legend in the city of Memphis, Dyer's serves up burgers with one, two or three patties and up to three slices of cheese. The menu also offers ribs, hot wings, red beans and rice, hot dogs and barbecue. Open for lunch and into the wee hours of the morning, Dyer's is a favorite spot for the nightlife crowd.
